VENICE — Public scrutiny surrounding Elon Musk’s personal life intensified following the high-profile premiere of Alex Gibney’s four-hour biographical documentary, Musk, at the Venice Film Festival.
The film pulls back the curtain on the complex and often turbulent private relationships of the world’s richest man, featuring rare, unfiltered accounts from his first wife, Justine Wilson, and former partner Ashley St. Clair.
A Marriage Defined by Control
Wilson, who was married to the Tesla and SpaceX billionaire from 2000 to 2008 and shares five living children with him, delivered some of the documentary’s most searing critiques. She described their marriage as “super toxic,” stating that Musk systematically diminished her self-worth and frequently treated her more like a corporate subordinate than a life partner.
Among the most striking revelations, Wilson recalled their wedding day, alleging that Musk pulled her aside during their celebration to declare, “I am the alpha in this relationship”. She noted that the ongoing dynamic of having her perceived shortcomings constantly underscored was her introduction to the concept of “gaslighting.”
The former couple also endured profound personal tragedy during their marriage, losing their firstborn son, Nevada, to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) at 10 weeks old. Wilson opens up in the film about the grief of that loss and the lingering emotional disconnect that followed.
The Millions-Dollar NDA Dispute
The documentary further widens its lens to contemporary relationships, featuring claims from former partner Ashley St. Clair. St. Clair alleged during the project’s rollout that she was previously pressured with a $40 million financial package tied to a strict non-disclosure agreement (NDA) to keep details of their dynamic private—an offer she claims she rejected to set an example for her children.
Musk has forcefully pushed back against these assertions. Representatives for the tech mogul denied that any such multimillion-dollar NDA offer was ever extended to St. Clair, dismissing her account as part of a recurring pattern of false allegations.

Director Alex Gibney’s sweeping unauthorized project—which Musk declined to participate in, previously dismissing it as a “hit piece”—examines much more than domestic fallout.
