FORT PORTAL — The succession battle for Uganda’s historic Tooro Kingdom has intensified following the sudden death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, throwing the royal family into deep public discord.
The Tooro royal clan’s succession committee announced Wednesday that Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a news anchor and editor at the state-run Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), has been chosen to take the throne as the next Omukama.
The decision immediately collided with a previous statement from the kingdom’s Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire, who maintained that the late 34-year-old monarch—who died of cancer in the United States on August 27—had left behind an infant heir, ensuring direct lineage continuity.
The proclamation has triggered immediate pushback from the inner circle of the late king. Princess Ruth Komuntale, Oyo’s sister, and the Queen Mother, Best Kemigisa, have fiercely rejected Kijanangoma’s selection, exposing a sharp fracture over traditional protocols.
King Oyo’s death marked the end of a remarkable three-decade reign. Ascending the throne in 1995 at the age of three, he captured global attention as the world’s youngest reigning monarch and grew to become a prominent voice as a United Nations goodwill ambassador.
As the kingdom prepares for the late king’s final funeral rites and burial on September 12, the scramble over the royal seat threatens to overshadow the mourning period, testing the resilience of traditional institutions within Uganda’s constitutional framework.
