Woman Stops Police From Taking Boys After Phone Search in Lagos

A viral video showing a woman confronting police officers who allegedly attempted to take two young boys away after searching their phones has sparked outrage on social media.

The incident comes months after the Lagos State Commissioner of Police warned officers against searching citizens’ phones during stop-and-search operations.

A viral video circulating on social media has captured the moment a woman confronted police officers in Lagos who allegedly attempted to take two young boys away after searching their phones.

The video, shared on Wednesday by an X user, @dammiedammie35, shows the woman challenging the officers and demanding that the boys be released.

“Are you crazy? These two boys are not going anywhere! You have to release them immediately,” the woman was heard saying.

She also questioned the officers’ alleged targeting of young men, asking,

“Is it every young boy that makes hair you’ll be targeting?”

Allegations of Abuse

One of the boys, who was recording the encounter, alleged that the officers had begun taking them away while one of them was still checking his phone.

He said, “When one officer was still checking my phone and was not even done, they pushed the other boy into the van and was slapping him”.

An officer involved in the encounter was heard explaining why the officers attempted to check the phones, saying,

“When we wanted to check the phone, one of the boys were saying they can’t, that they’re doing illegal searches” .

The officer further warned the boy,

“If it’s your father that’s even the IG of Police, you’ll show respect to us first”.

Another officer was heard asking the boy recording the incident to “calm down”, but he responded,

“I won’t calm down, after forcing us into the bus” .

A Pattern of Abuse

According to the post accompanying the video, the officers searched the boys’ phones and allegedly told them to call whoever they wished to contact.

The X user claimed that the woman and another person prevented the officers from taking the boys away after allegedly conducting an illegal search of their phones.

The incident has since generated reactions on X, with users alleging similar encounters involving young men and police officers in Ikorodu, Lagos.

One X user, #ARedhat, claimed,

“One told me they will kill me and dump my body in the trench. I have proof of everything. They mount their road block in Ikorodu Garage to Adamo Road”.

The user further alleged that some of the men involved were not police officers.

Police Had Been Warned

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, stated that officers have been warned against searching people’s phones during stop-and-search operations.

The CP said, “Our men have been warned not to search any phone from any individual. We are there to search the vehicles”.

He directed officers to focus on vehicle checks and passenger verification, while adding that officers acting within the law should not be afraid of being recorded.

The circumstances leading to the encounter, the reason for the police search and whether the search was unlawful could not be independently verified.

A Lesson for Nigeria

The viral video is a reminder that the right to dignity and privacy must not be sacrificed on the altar of security.

When police officers abuse their authority, they do not just violate individual rights, they erode public trust in the institutions meant to protect citizens.

The same officers who engage in such conduct would never allow their own children to be treated in such a manner.

For Nigeria, the lesson is clear: accountability is non-negotiable. The same leaders who speak of police reform must be willing to enforce the rules they have set.

The Lagos CP’s warning was clear, but it is meaningless without enforcement.
