Escalation in Yemen as Houthi Strikes Wound 73 in Saudi Arabia

​Renewed hostilities in the long-running Yemen conflict have spilled across the border, with Saudi authorities reporting that a wave of Houthi missile and drone strikes wounded at least 73 civilians, including women and children.

​Major-General Turki al-Maliki, spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition, condemned the attacks as a dangerous escalation. The strikes targeted civilian and economic infrastructure across the southern Saudi provinces of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan, and Najran.

​Simultaneously, the Saudi Ministry of Energy confirmed that several energy sector installations in the kingdom’s southern region were hit early Tuesday. The impacts triggered fires at multiple sites and forced a temporary suspension of operations at select facilities.

​The cross-border attack coincides with a major domestic counteroffensive launched by the internationally recognized Yemeni government, backed by the Saudi-led coalition, aiming to reclaim territory from the Iran-backed Houthi movement. Fighting has intensified across multiple provinces, including Taiz, Hodeidah, al-Dhalea, Marib, al-Jawf, and al-Bayda.

​The renewed violence marks a severe breakdown of the relative calm that had largely held since a United Nations-brokered truce in 2022. Hostilities flared anew following regional escalations involving Iran, leading the Houthis to target Saudi Arabia with aerial drones and impose a naval blockade affecting Red Sea shipping lanes.

​Humanitarian agencies have expressed grave concern over the surging casualty numbers. The World Health Organization reports that approximately 1,078 people have been killed or wounded since August 24, while more than 21,000 residents have been displaced by the latest round of fighting.
