A Clean Sweep
ValidViewNetwork gathered that Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas has ordered the immediate dissolution of all ad hoc committees of the lower chamber, bringing an end to the activities of temporary panels whose mandates and approved extensions have expired.
The directive, communicated in a statement by Clerk of the House Sidi Ibrahim, takes effect from Friday, August 28, 2026.
Members were instructed to immediately cease representing themselves or carrying out activities on behalf of any affected committee.
Only Two Had Extensions
According to the House, only two committees had applied for and obtained extensions under Order 18, Rule 5 of the Standing Orders, but the additional two weeks granted had elapsed without their continued existence being justified.
“For the avoidance of doubt, honourable members are reminded that ad hoc committees are temporary committees of the house established for specific and time-bound mandates. They are not intended to subsist indefinitely beyond the purpose and period for which they were constituted,” the statement read.
What Happens Next
Chairmen of dissolved committees have been directed to forward all outstanding reports, working documents and records to the Office of the Clerk for safekeeping.
The dissolution is expected to streamline the activities of the House and ensure that all committees operate within their constitutional and procedural mandates.
A Lesson for Nigerian Youths
This dissolution is a reminder that no one is above the rules. When temporary committees outlive their purpose, they must be dissolved.
For young Nigerians, the lesson is clear: the law applies to everyone.
The same people who bend the rules will never allow their own children to be victims of lawlessness.
Demand accountability. Respect the rules. And never forget that institutions are stronger when they follow their own procedures.
