​Public health experts have dismissed claims linking the ongoing diphtheria resurgence to the rainy season, stressing that systemic immunization gaps and incomplete childhood vaccinations are the primary catalysts behind the spread.

​Speaking on current public health challenges, medical professionals noted that missed vaccine doses, high drop-out rates, and severe overcrowding in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps have left children critically vulnerable. Northern states—with Kano remaining a primary epicentre—continue to record significant transmission loads due to barriers caused by insecurity, poverty, and reduced access to routine health services.

​Experts emphasize that the standard immunization protocol requires multiple doses of diphtheria-containing vaccines, including necessary boosters, to build adequate herd immunity. Low coverage rates mean that thousands of zero-dose or partially vaccinated children remain exposed to the bacterium.
