Association of Education Officers Launched to Strengthen Professional Identity

The Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has established the Association of Education Officers for Education Officers in the State Civil Service, a trailblazing initiative aimed at strengthening the professional identity of education officers, promoting continuous professional development, and raising the standard of education administration in the state.

A New Chapter for Education Administration

ValidViewNetwork gathered that the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has established the Association of Education Officers for Education Officers in the State Civil Service, a trailblazing initiative aimed at strengthening the professional identity of education officers and raising the standard of education administration in the state.

The initiative, under the leadership of the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, FMAN, has been commended as another example of Ogun State’s tradition of educational innovation.

In a statement signed by Akinleye Olubori, a retired Board Secretary of the Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and former Executive Secretary of the Ogun State Technical and Vocational Education Board (OGSTVEB), the establishment of the association was described as strategic, visionary and potentially transformative.

“At a time when professionalism, efficiency, accountability and continuous capacity development are increasingly essential to effective public service delivery, providing Education Officers with a distinct professional voice and platform is undoubtedly a step in the right direction,” Olubori said.

Ogun’s Tradition of Educational Firsts

Olubori noted that Ogun State has a historical tradition of educational innovation.

The story of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) is closely connected to Ogun’s rich educational heritage.

Rev. Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti, who was associated with the teachers’ movement in Abeokuta and the Association of Headmasters of Ijebu Schools, emerged as the pioneer National President when the NUT was formally established in 1931.

“The founding process brought together teachers’ associations from Lagos, Agege, Abeokuta, Ibadan, Calabar and Ijebu-Ode.

This historical connection demonstrates that Ogun’s contribution to organised professionalism in education is not a recent phenomenon,” Olubori said.

A Renewed Commitment to Professionalism

The establishment of the association is an attempt to give Education Officers a distinct professional identity. Education Officers occupy a strategic position within the education system, involved in planning, administration, supervision, monitoring, policy implementation, quality assurance, data management and the coordination of educational programmes.

Yet, despite the importance of these responsibilities, Education Officers have often operated primarily as public servants without the distinct professional identity and platform enjoyed by many other cadres and professions.

“This association should provide Education Officers with an organised professional platform through which they can identify with their profession, develop their capacities, exchange knowledge, uphold ethical standards and collectively pursue excellence in education service delivery,” Olubori said.

A Vision for the Future

The association should become a vehicle for continuous professional development, seminars, research, mentoring, peer learning and the sharing of innovative approaches to education administration.

It should also provide a platform for recognising and celebrating outstanding Education Officers whose contributions have positively impacted education service delivery.

“A strong professional association should ultimately translate into improved service delivery. Through continuous learning and professional interaction, Education Officers can remain responsive to emerging developments in education, including digital transformation, data-driven decision-making, policy evaluation, quality assurance, curriculum implementation and modern education management,” Olubori said.

A Milestone for Education Administration

The initiative builds on other recent achievements in Ogun State’s education sector, including the digitalisation of several administrative processes, the strengthening of the Education Management Information System (EMIS), the revamping of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) infrastructure through the Yellow-Roof Revolution, and the recruitment of additional teachers for primary, secondary and technical colleges.

A Legacy of Leadership

The establishment of the Association of Education Officers is a declaration that professionalism matters, excellence matters, and the Education Officer deserves a distinct professional identity.

The ultimate beneficiary should be the education system and, most importantly, the Nigerian child.

“I am delighted that my own educational career, like that of my late father, Otunba Dr Isaac Adekunjo Akinleye, who was also an educationist, was significantly enriched by involvement in union activities, with both of us serving as NUT Executive Officers at different times,” Olubori said.

“I am also happy and felt honoured to have served as the Unit Chairman, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASSCN) of the State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, and therefore, to have witnessed the establishment of this new association. It is indeed heartwarming.”

A Call for Professionalism

As the association takes shape, stakeholders are calling for it to become a living professional institution, committed to developing its members, promoting ethical standards, strengthening professional competence and improving education administration.

If properly structured, professionally managed and sustainably supported, the association could become a model for other states.

“I remain committed to supporting the growth and development of education in Ogun State. I shall not hesitate to contribute in whatever form or capacity necessary to ensure that the Association of Education Officers fulfils its intended purpose,” Olubori said.
