Active Shooter Incident in Minneapolis Claims Three Lives

​MINNEAPOLIS — A Wednesday afternoon gunfire exchange inside a high-rise residential building in downtown Minneapolis left three people dead, including the suspected gunman, and wounded six others, authorities confirmed.

​The incident unfolded shortly after 4:30 p.m. local time on September 2 at an apartment complex located near 15 East Grant Street in the densely populated Loring Park neighborhood. Minneapolis Police Department officers rushed to the scene within minutes of receiving initial 911 reports.

​According to Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson and department spokesperson Sgt. Garrett Parten, responding officers traced the sounds of active gunfire to an upper floor of the building. As officers pushed forward, they encountered an obstructing haze that drastically limited visibility before engaging the shooter.

​One civilian victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second succumbed to injuries after being rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC). The suspected shooter was also found dead at the location. While a preliminary investigation indicates the suspect may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials stated that the exact cause of death remains officially unconfirmed.

​Three Minneapolis police officers were injured during the violent confrontation. Officers Joseph Michnowski and Yahye Ahmed sustained gunshot injuries. One suffered a non-life-threatening wound to the leg, while the second underwent emergency surgery for abdominal wounds. A third officer was evaluated for minor injuries. Hospital representatives and city officials confirmed that all hospitalized officers are in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery. Four additional civilians sustained injuries and received treatment at HCMC.

​Mayor Jacob Frey commended the swift and courageous response of the city’s emergency personnel. “They rescued victims, brought people to safety… all while getting shot at themselves,” Frey said during a joint briefing.

​State and federal leaders responded quickly to the tragedy. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz took to social media to express gratitude for the rapid deployment of emergency services, stating that the state public safety team was actively supporting local authorities on the ground. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Kash Patel also confirmed that federal agents were mobilized to offer supplemental resources and support local law enforcement agencies.

​Investigators have not yet established a definitive motive for the shooting, though police noted that law enforcement was previously familiar with the suspect. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and local authorities are continuing to process the scene and investigate the broader circumstances surrounding the attack.
