Nigeria’s Super Falcons will have a new head coach before the team begins its 2028 Women’s Olympic qualifying campaign in October.

The development comes after another turbulent period for Nigerian women’s football, with the national team remaining one of the country’s most successful sporting institutions despite recurring administrative and technical controversies.

Events on Wednesday posits that the Nigeria Football Federation is expected to appoint a new coach before the Olympic qualifying campaign begins.

Talent has never been Nigeria’s biggest problem

Nigeria possesses an extraordinary pool of female football talent. The country consistently produces players capable of competing at the highest level in Europe and internationally.

The bigger problem has often been continuity. Frequent coaching changes can force teams to repeatedly adapt to new tactical systems, selection philosophies and training methods.

That becomes particularly damaging when competitions arrive with limited preparation time.

The Olympic question

The Olympic tournament is one of the biggest stages in women’s football.Nigeria’s failure to qualify for some recent editions has therefore been more than a sporting disappointment.

It has exposed structural weaknesses in preparation and administration. A new coach must consequently receive more than a contract.

The NFF needs to provide clear targets, adequate preparation time, quality opposition and stable technical support. Otherwise, another coaching appointment may simply become another temporary solution to a permanent problem.
