JACKSONVILLE, Ala. — A collegiate basketball player originally from Nigeria has been denied bond and remains behind bars facing first-degree rape charges following a court ruling.

Daniel Adegboyega, a 21-year-old student-athlete at Jacksonville State University (JSU), appeared before District Judge Randy J. Moeller, who ruled that the defendant pose a flight risk and a threat to public safety. Prosecutors successfully argued for his continued detention under Aniah’s Law, emphasizing that no set of release conditions would sufficiently guarantee his court appearances or community safety.

Incident and Investigation Timeline

According to investigative details presented by Jacksonville Police Department Investigator Andrew Swain, the case began late on the evening of July 28. The alleged victim arrived at Adegboyega’s off-campus apartment around 11:30 p.m. to watch a movie. Within twenty minutes, the victim stated that Adegboyega made unwanted sexual advances and ignored her repeated demands to stop.

Court documents indicate the victim managed to text her roommate for help amidst the ordeal. After several phone calls went unanswered, Adegboyega reportedly answered a subsequent call from the roommate on the victim’s phone, claiming she was currently in the bathroom.

Alarmed by the situation, the roommate alerted local law enforcement to conduct a welfare check. Officers arrived at the apartment at approximately 2:00 a.m., discovering the victim in a visibly distressed state.

Evidence and Legal Proceedings

Investigators gathered physical evidence from the scene, including blood-stained clothing items and a completed rape kit. The victim alleged she was forcibly assaulted twice during the encounter, an accusation Adegboyega has denied while maintaining he used no force.

Judge Moeller’s written order highlighted compelling evidence presented at the hearing, pointing to the victim’s statements, corroborating room-to-room text messages sent during the assault, and recovered physical exhibits. Additional digital analysis and lab results remain pending.

Institutional and Immigration Status

In response to the criminal charges, university athletic administration acted swiftly. Assistant Athletic Director Donnie Smith confirmed Adegboyega’s immediate suspension from the men’s basketball roster. University officials noted that because the incident occurred off campus, ongoing inquiries are being handled directly by the Jacksonville Police Department.

Records from the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office indicate that Adegboyega is also being held under an immigration detainer by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Adegboyega, a native of Lagos, Nigeria, played high school basketball in Iowa prior to a collegiate stint at the University of South Florida (USF) before transferring to JSU. Legal proceedings are expected to continue as state prosecutors compile further forensic and digital evidence.
