​Sopranos Star Vincent Pastore Dies at 80

​Veteran character actor Vincent Pastore, immortalized on television screens worldwide for his unforgettable portrayal of mobster Salvatore “Big Pussy” Bonpensiero on the landmark HBO mafia drama The Sopranos, has died at the age of 80.

​According to his longtime manager, Bob McGowan, Pastore was found dead at his home on New York’s City Island after friends and associates were unable to reach him for a few days. McGowan learned of the passing from fellow Sopranos actor Vincent Curatola.

​While Pastore became a household name navigating the tense criminal underworld of Tony Soprano’s crew, his journey to the screen was as authentic as the gritty New York neighborhoods that shaped him. Born in the Bronx and raised in suburban New Rochelle, New York, Pastore enlisted in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War before later attending Pace University.

​Before hitting it big in the entertainment industry, Pastore worked a variety of everyday jobs, giving him a grounded perspective that deeply informed his acting. He eventually broke into film in the late 1980s, carving out a niche for himself playing tough guys, gangsters, and mob affiliates. His early credits included notable appearances in cinematic classics like Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas and Penny Marshall’s Awakenings, both released in 1990.

​However, his defining cultural footprint came in 1999 with The Sopranos. Over a memorable 30-episode run, Pastore brought immense emotional depth and tragic nuance to “Big Pussy”—a loyal friend to mob boss Tony Soprano who secretly becomes an FBI informant, leading to one of the most iconic and heartbreaking character arcs in television history.

​Beyond his tough-guy exterior on television and film, colleagues remembered him as deeply generous. McGowan recalled him as an exceptionally loyal client who frequently gave to charity and went out of his way to help others in need—a rare trait in the competitive entertainment business.
