Data compiled up to July 30, 2026, indicates that confirmed cases have surged to 3,605, resulting in 1,587 deaths and a case fatality rate of 44 percent. Public health officials note that the current figures have officially surpassed the previous historic peak recorded between 2018 and 2020.
The epicenter remains localized in the northeastern Ituri province, sharing porous borders with Uganda and South Sudan. Compounding response measures are severe regional challenges, including ongoing civil insecurity, population displacement, and rapid cross-border trade movements. Meanwhile, neighboring Uganda recently cleared its mandatory 42-day post-treatment monitoring window following an earlier imported cluster, though global health agencies continue to urge heightened vigilance across Central and East Africa.
