Norway to Challenge FIFA in Ethics Complaint Over Balogun Ruling

​The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) is spearheading a stand against external political interference in global football, preparing a formal ethics complaint against FIFA over the controversial suspension of Folarin Balogun’s World Cup ban.

​The controversy erupted during the tournament when USMNT striker Balogun was shown a red card during the United States’ round-of-32 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina. While an automatic dismissal typically carries a mandatory one-match suspension—which would have ruled him out of the crucial clash against Belgium—FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee unexpectedly suspended the ban. It was later confirmed that US President Donald Trump had personally telephoned FIFA President Gianni Infantino to urge a review of the decision.

​NFF President Lise Klaveness slammed the move as a dangerous breach of governance that threatens the fundamental principles of the sport. Speaking to The Times, Klaveness announced plans to bring the motion before the NFF board, aiming to lodge an official complaint with FIFA’s Ethics Committee.

​”When you bend a rule like this, you’re on a slippery slope that will put the whole game at risk,” Klaveness warned. “We all know that this verdict was influenced from external forces and did not have the proper process. We need our leader in FIFA to say that this was an error.”

​Klaveness also criticized the lack of transparency surrounding the ruling, noting that the decision to defer the ban was pushed through by the chairman of FIFA’s disciplinary committee without consulting the wider committee. Stressing that the global football community will not allow the scandal to be buried, she added: “To try to sweep this under the carpet now will not fly.”

​The impending action marks the second major clash between the NFF and FIFA’s leadership, following a previous formal complaint lodged over Infantino’s decision to award Trump FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize. Despite mounting pressure from European football figures, Infantino has defended the disciplinary committee’s autonomy, insisting that standard regulations and independent facts governed the case.
