A taxi driver narrowly averted a potential tragedy this afternoon after his vehicle suddenly caught fire while in transit along the Olórunsogo–Abiola Road, heading towards the Iyana Mortuary area.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, acted quickly upon noticing the flames, managing to exit the car safely before it was completely overtaken by the fire. Miraculously, no lives were lost in the incident.
Despite the driver’s escape, the damage to his livelihood was absolute. As shown in the scene captured in the pictures, the vehicle was reduced to a charred shell, leaving bystanders to observe the aftermath along the busy route. The intensity of the blaze, which destroyed the engine and chassis as shown below, also consumed all of the driver’s daily earnings from his passengers, along with his personal belongings that were stored inside the car.
While the exact cause of the sudden combustion remains unconfirmed, this incident highlights a critical safety deficiency: the lack of functional fire extinguishers in most Nigerian vehicles. Despite their life-saving potential, most vehicle owners in Nigeria do not bother to purchase or maintain this necessary equipment, leaving them vulnerable to preventable total losses when minor sparks turn into uncontrollable infernos. Local authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the specific mechanical failure that triggered the blaze.
