EDMONTON — A north-end community is grieving the tragic loss of a four-year-old girl following a fatal pedestrian collision in the McConachie neighbourhood on Sunday afternoon.
The victim has been identified by family members as Rayna Chiziterem Okoli.
According to the Edmonton Police Service, the incident occurred on June 14 around 5:15 p.m. Investigators report that Rayna was walking through a commercial parking lot near 66 Street and 170 Avenue with her mother when she unexpectedly broke free and ran onto the roadway. She was subsequently struck by a passing Jeep.
Bystanders rushed to the scene to administer first aid until emergency medical services arrived. Rayna was urgently transported to the Stollery Children’s Hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Police confirmed that the 23-year-old driver of the Jeep remained at the scene and cooperated fully with the investigation. Authorities have stated that neither speed nor driver impairment are considered factors in the collision. The EPS Major Collision Investigations Section maintains oversight of the case.
Family Faces “Unimagined Pain” and Financial Strain
In the wake of the tragedy, loved ones have remembered Rayna as a bright, joyful, and deeply cherished child who brought immense warmth to those around her.
Beyond the devastating emotional toll, the family is now facing unexpected financial pressures associated with funeral and memorial arrangements. A GoFundMe campaign initiated by a relative seeks to ease this burden, aiming to raise $20,000 CAD. As of publication, the campaign has raised just under $5,000.
”Our hearts are shattered,” the family shared in an online statement. “Losing her so suddenly has left our family in unimaginable pain. As we grieve this heartbreaking loss, we are also faced with the unexpected financial burden of funeral and memorial expenses.”
The family has appealed to the public for assistance, noting that every contribution helps provide Rayna with a dignified farewell. Community members wishing to support the Okoli family can find the donation portal online under her name.
