A cloud of grief and shock has settled over Salaga, located in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savannah Region, following the tragic death of a young man during the annual Fire Festival celebrations.
The deceased, popularly known as Sheihu and believed to be in his early twenties, lost his life on Wednesday evening, June 24, 2026, after a public demonstration of alleged supernatural powers went horribly wrong.
According to shaken eyewitnesses, the incident occurred during a youth-organized program designed as part of the cultural festivities. In an attempt to prove his spiritual invincibility to a gathered crowd, Sheihu drew a knife and turned it on himself.
Instead of the blade failing to pierce his skin—as is commonly claimed by some practitioners of traditional protective charms—the weapon inflicted severe, deep wounds.

The spectacle instantly turned into a scene of panic as Sheihu began bleeding heavily. Horrified spectators rushed him to the Salaga Government Hospital for emergency medical intervention. Despite the best efforts of the medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The community has been left in deep mourning, with residents openly questioning the escalating dangers of such extreme demonstrations during traditional festivals. Local authorities have been notified and are expected to launch a full investigation into the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
