Lionel Messi once again etched his name deeper into football history after delivering a remarkable performance in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria at the FIFA World Cup, setting multiple records that further cement his status as one of the greatest players the sport has ever produced.
The Argentine captain scored twice in the Group J encounter, helping the defending champions secure qualification for the knockout stage while rewriting several pages of the World Cup record books.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Messi became the all time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history after taking his tally to 18 goals, surpassing the previous record of 16 held by German legend Miroslav Klose.
The Inter Miami star opened the scoring in the first half before adding another goal in stoppage time, extending his lead at the summit of the tournament’s scoring chart.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Messi also became the highest scorer across both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cups, moving ahead of Brazilian icon Marta, who scored 17 goals during her illustrious Women’s World Cup career.
The 39 year old further matched another historic achievement by scoring in six consecutive World Cup matches, equalling the record jointly held by France’s Just Fontaine and Brazil’s Jairzinho.
Despite missing an early penalty against Austria, Messi inadvertently entered another section of the record books by becoming the first player to miss penalties in three different World Cup editions, having previously failed from the spot in 2018 and 2022.
The Argentine skipper also extended his record as the player with the most FIFA World Cup Man of the Match awards after collecting his 13th individual honour following his masterclass against Austria, ValidViewNetwork reports.
Messi’s latest achievements come as Argentina continues its quest to successfully defend the World Cup title, with the South Americans looking increasingly formidable as the tournament progresses.
