​Taxis Return to Ijebu-Ode in Six Months

​IJEBU-ODE – Intrabacity taxi services are set to make a dramatic comeback to Ijebu-Ode within the next six months, marking the end of a prolonged era of commuter reliance on commercial motorcycles.

​Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the upcoming transport intervention during the official commissioning of three major road projects in the ancient town: the Tam Balogun, Stadium, and Luba Roads, which span a combined six kilometers.

​Addressing residents and stakeholders at the event, Governor Abiodun explained that taxi operations had completely vanished from the commercial nerve center due to severe road degradation inherited by his administration. He recalled that upon taking office in 2019, the state of the town’s inner roads prompted his government to immediately declare a state of emergency on infrastructure in the region.

​”The total collapse of the road network in Ijebu-Ode made it impossible for conventional taxi businesses to survive, leaving residents with limited transit options,” the Governor stated. “After years of systematic intervention, I am pleased to announce that we are partnering with private investors to reintroduce a modern, reliable taxi scheme befitting the historical status of the capital of Ijebuland.”

​A Blueprint for Urban Renewal

​The revival of the transit system is backed by a massive infrastructure campaign. According to the Governor, the state government has successfully reconstructed 26 critical roads within the Ijebu-Ode Local Government Area, with an additional 12 road projects currently underway.

​Reflecting on his trip to the commissioning event, Governor Abiodun noted that the journey from the state capital, Abeokuta, to Ijebu-Ode has been significantly streamlined, serving as a testament to the socioeconomic impact of the ongoing arterial upgrades.

​Call to Action for Residents

​While celebrating the infrastructure milestone, the Governor reminded citizens of their civic responsibilities regarding public property. He strongly cautioned against the dumping of refuse into newly constructed drainage systems, emphasizing that the projects were funded entirely through taxpayers’ money and must be preserved.

​”These roads belong to the people. Decongestion and cleanliness of the drainage channels are vital to ensuring the longevity of these multi-billion naira investments,” Abiodun urged.
