ZANZIBAR — Tanzanian authorities have officially concluded their investigation into the tragic death of American social media influencer Ashlee Jenae, ruling that the 31-year-old died by suicide brought on by severe mental distress.
The announcement, delivered by Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations Zuberi Chembera during a press conference in Zanzibar, aims to close the legal chapter on a case that has gripped international headlines for two months. However, the findings have done little to comfort the late influencer’s family, who continue to publicly dispute the official narrative.
A Tragic End to an Engagement Trip
Jenae, whose legal name was Ashly Robinson, was a New Jersey native with a vibrant online presence. She was found unconscious on April 9 at the ultra-luxury Zuri Zanzibar resort, just six days after accepting a safari marriage proposal from her tech-mogul fiancé, Joe McCann.
According to local police reports, the celebratory trip took a dark turn in the hours leading up to her death. Hotel staff reportedly intervened during a “volatile” argument between the newly engaged couple. The dispute grew severe enough that resort management relocated McCann, 45, to a separate room for safety.
According to McCann’s account to investigators, he later returned to Jenae’s room accompanied by a hotel security guard to check on her welfare. It was then that they discovered her body. A local hospital later certified the official cause of death as cerebral hypoxia resulting from strangulation and suffocation.
Authorities Clear Fiancé
In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, the Tanzania Police Force briefly grounded McCann, withholding his passport and questioning him extensively. Because of his high profile—McCann is the wealthy founder of the crypto fund Asymmetric Financial—speculation swirled online.
However, local authorities and international media outlets, including the BBC, later clarified that McCann was questioned strictly as a witness and was never considered a suspect.
”Through witness statements and analysis of communication devices belonging to the deceased and her fiancé, we established that she had been experiencing mental distress,” Deputy Director Chembera stated, adding that SMS exchanges on Jenae’s phone revealed repeated complaints regarding her personal life circumstances.
”Our investigation has confirmed no individual was implicated in the death,” Chembera concluded.
Grief and Tributes
Following the closure of the police probe, McCann broke his silence with an emotional public tribute, describing Jenae as a deeply empathetic and nurturing partner who embraced her Trinidadian heritage and proudly called herself a “lover gyal.”
”There is no way to fill the unfillable void left by Ashly’s passing and no way to make sense of this unfathomable loss,” McCann wrote, noting her close relationship with his children. “All we can do is carry on Ashly’s legacy of helping other people and strive to live up to her virtues every single day.”
Family Rejects Official Findings
Despite the police department’s conclusive report, Jenae’s family refuses to accept the ruling, maintaining that the circumstances surrounding her passing remain highly “suspicious.”
Her parents, Yolanda Endres and Harry Robinson, expressed deep frustration with the timeline of events, claiming that McCann waited 11 hours after the tragedy to notify them and has remained vague about the details of that fateful night.
Speaking to the media, Jenae’s 20-year-old sister, Alyssa Endres, adamantly rejected the idea that the high-spirited influencer would take her own life, stating it was “extremely” out of character for someone so full of joy and future plans.
In a joint statement, the grieving family expressed their profound skepticism and heartache:
”Nothing about this loss feels real. One moment she was celebrating love and life in truly Ashly fashion, and the next, she was gone. The suddenness, the unanswered questions, and the distance from home have made this tragedy even more overwhelming for our family.”
While Zanzibari officials consider the case resolved, the steep divide between the police findings and the family’s search for clarity ensures that the cloud of mystery over the Zuri Zanzibar resort will not soon disappear.
