MAIDUGURI — Armed bandits have abducted at least seven polytechnic students in Nigeria’s northwestern state of Zamfara, local police confirmed on Thursday. The incident marks the latest in a relentless wave of mass kidnappings targeting educational institutions and rural communities across the volatile region.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, June 3, around 04:00 GMT. Heavily armed gunmen, locally referred to as bandits, stormed an off-campus student residential area on the outskirts of the Low-Cost neighborhood in Kaura Namoda town.
According to a statement released by the Zamfara State Police Command, the assailants aggressively raided the rented apartments where the students resided before forcing them to an unknown destination.
A combined force of police tactical teams and military personnel was deployed to the scene shortly after the alarm was raised. However, the abductors had already fled into the dense forests flanking the area before security forces arrived.
”Search-and-rescue operations have been aggressively stepped up across the axis,” the Zamfara Police Command stated, adding that security agencies are working in tandem to secure the safe, unconditional release of the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Northwest Nigeria, particularly Zamfara State, has been plagued for years by violent criminal syndicates. These groups frequently perpetrate mass kidnappings for ransom, raid isolated villages, and murder civilians, consistently overwhelming local security measures despite repeated military offensives.
No group has claimed responsibility for the raid, and no ransom demands have been made public as of Thursday evening. Security forces have urged members of the public with any actionable intelligence to come forward.
