Momodu Denies 2027 VP Ambition, Pledges Support for Opposition Coalition

ABUJA – Veteran journalist and publisher of Ovation International, Chief Dele Momodu, has officially debunked viral reports suggesting he is positioning himself as a vice-presidential candidate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 general elections.

​In a strongly worded statement released on Thursday, Momodu characterized the circulating campaign posters featuring himself and Atiku as a “joke” and a calculated distraction from the urgent task of national rescue.

​“When I first received this poster from a friend, I dismissed it as a joke designed to distract us,” Momodu stated. “I will be most grateful if my friends and party members can do me the honour of ignoring this joke. I am not running for any race again.”

​Shift to Coalition Building

​The media entrepreneur, who was a presidential aspirant in the 2022 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primaries, clarified that his current political priority is not personal ambition but the consolidation of a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

​Momodu, who recently aligned himself with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) after expressing dissatisfaction with the internal dynamics of the PDP, emphasized that his role is now that of a facilitator. He noted that the ADC possesses a wealth of competent leaders capable of contesting the presidency, and he intends to “humbly support” the emergence of a formidable coalition.

​”I’m interested in humbly supporting the coalition of political parties, to work together and oust the incompetent APC government,” he added.

​Beyond his personal status, Momodu took the opportunity to address what he termed the “bullying” of Atiku Abubakar. He reminded critics that prominent figures, including Peter Obi, had previously seen value in partnering with the former Vice President, as seen in the 2019 elections.

​While advocating for a change in government, the publisher cautioned against the use of abusive rhetoric in the political space. He urged opposition supporters to maintain decorum and avoid personal attacks on President Bola Tinubu, suggesting that the focus should remain on policy failures and the “existential challenges” facing the country.

​Momodu’s exit from the PDP and his subsequent pivot toward the ADC mirrors a broader realignment within Nigeria’s opposition. Recent weeks have seen high-level talks between key figures from the ADC, the Labour Party (LP), and disgruntled remnants of the PDP, all aiming to form a “National Liberation” front.

​As the 2027 cycle begins to take shape, Momodu’s declaration signals a shift from his traditional role as a candidate to a kingmaker within the nascent opposition merger. He maintained that he would support whichever candidate the coalition eventually produces, provided they represent a credible alternative to the status quo.
