Deadly Russian Barrage Shatters Dnipro as Kyiv Strikes Deep into Urals

​DNIPRO, Ukraine – A massive wave of Russian missiles and “suicide” drones tore through Ukrainian cities overnight, killing at least seven people and leaving rescuers to claw through the smoking ruins of civilian apartment blocks. The assault, described by President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “practically all-night” bombardment, targeted energy infrastructure and residential hubs from the northern border to the Black Sea.

​Devastation in Dnipro and Chernihiv

​The central city of Dnipro bore the brunt of the violence. Local officials confirmed that five people, including two children aged 9 and 17, were killed when a residential building was leveled. In the northern city of Chernihiv, two additional fatalities were reported as ballistic missiles struck civilian infrastructure.

​Ukrainian air defenses reportedly intercepted the “vast majority” of the more than 600 drones launched, yet the sheer volume of the saturation attack allowed several high-speed ballistic missiles to slip through.

​Kyiv’s Record-Breaking Retaliation

​As smoke rose over Dnipro, Ukraine proved its reaching power is growing. In a record-breaking counter-raid, Ukrainian long-range drones traveled more than 1,800km (1,100 miles) to strike industrial and military targets in the Ural Mountains.

​Explosions were reported in Yekaterinburg and Chelyabinsk, hitting a military aviation school and a metallurgical plant. This 10-hour mission represents the deepest Ukrainian strike into Russian territory since the full-scale invasion began, bypassing sophisticated air defense networks to bring the war to Russia’s industrial heartland.

​NATO Border Tensions

​The escalation briefly threatened to pull NATO directly into the fray. Two British RAF Typhoon jets were scrambled from Borcea Air Base in Romania after Russian drones were detected loitering near the border.

​While initial reports suggested the jets had engaged the targets, the UK Ministry of Defence clarified that the drones were “neutralized” outside Romanian airspace and no British weapons were fired. The incident underscores the razor-thin margin for error as Russian munitions frequently stray near the borders of NATO members.

​Amid the carnage, Kyiv secured two major strategic victories:

• ​EU Financial Shield: The European Union formally unblocked a €90 billion ($96bn) loan for Ukraine. The deadlock ended following the recent election of Peter Magyar in Hungary, who moved to lift the long-standing veto held by his predecessor. The funds are earmarked for defense and stabilizing the Ukrainian economy through 2027.

• ​Saudi Security Pact: President Zelensky traveled to Jeddah to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Sources indicate Saudi Arabia is seeking “drone warfare expertise” from Ukraine following recent regional threats, while Kyiv is pushing for advanced air-defense cooperation with Gulf allies.

​”The Russians’ tactics have not changed,” Zelensky said in a social media address from Kyiv. “But our resilience—and our reach—has.”

​As rescue teams in Dnipro continue to search for the five people still missing under the rubble, the war appears to be entering a new, more expansive phase where no city on either side of the border is truly out of reach.
