LAGOS – Telecommunications giant MTN Nigeria has commenced the distribution of airtime compensation to millions of subscribers who suffered through a series of network disruptions in January 2026.
The move follows a directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) mandating telecom operators to adhere to strict Quality of Service (QoS) standards or face stiff penalties. Affected users began receiving credit alerts on Friday, accompanied by apology messages for the service lapses experienced at the start of the year.
Mixed Reactions Over Payout Amounts
While many customers welcomed the gesture, the varied nature of the compensation has sparked a lively debate on social media. PUNCH Online observed notifications sent to users ranging from N341 to as little as N20.
”Dear Customer, your account has been credited with N341 airtime for quality of service issues in January 2026. Thank you for your understanding,” one of the automated messages read.
On the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), some subscribers expressed dissatisfaction, labeling the lower-tier credits as “insignificant” compared to the business losses incurred during the January blackout. Conversely, industry analysts suggest the tiered system is likely based on the individual subscriber’s average spend and the specific duration of downtime experienced on their specific lines.
Regulatory Pressure and Infrastructure
The January disruption was reportedly linked to multiple fiber-optic cable cuts and technical upgrades in key regional hubs. The NCC has recently ramped up its oversight, insisting that “the consumer is king” and that service providers must be held accountable for downtime that exceeds permissible thresholds.
MTN Nigeria had earlier reaffirmed its commitment to network stability, announcing an aggressive capital expenditure plan for 2026 aimed at hardening its infrastructure against physical damage and cyber threats.
It remains unclear exactly how many of MTN’s estimated 77 million Nigerian subscribers are eligible for the rebate, or if a second wave of compensation for data users is in the pipeline.
