Delta State in Mourning as Governor’s SSA on Protocol, Sunny Kotor, Slumps and Dies

ASABA – The Delta State Government has been thrown into a state of mourning following the sudden and tragic passing of Mr. Sunday “Sunny” Kotor, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Protocol to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

​Mr. Kotor, a veteran Master of Ceremonies who had become a fixture at State House functions for over two decades, reportedly died of a suspected cardiac arrest on Friday evening. The incident occurred in his maternal hometown of Oviri-Ogor, located in Ughelli North Local Government Area.

According to family sources, Mr. Kotor had traveled to the community to participate in the burial rites of a deceased aunt. Following the ceremony, he was relaxing with friends and relatives when the tragedy unfolded. Witnesses noted that his mobile phone rang several times without response. Upon attempting to rouse him, those present discovered he was unconscious and not breathing.

​He was rushed to Lilly Hospital in Ughelli and subsequently moved to the Central Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed he was dead on arrival.

A graduate of Mass Communication from Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Sunny Kotor was widely regarded as a consummate professional in the field of protocol and public speaking. His career spanned multiple administrations, having served under former Governors Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan and Senator Ifeanyi Okowa before his reappointment by Governor Oborevwori.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori described the loss as “painful and devastating.”

​”The late Sunday Kotor was wholly dedicated to his job. His passing is a huge loss, not only to his family but to the government and people of Delta State who benefited from his professionalism,” the Governor said. He further extended his condolences to the deceased’s brother, Mr. Conference Kotor, who also serves as an SSA (Media) to the Governor.

​The Delta State Commissioner for Special Duties, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, also released a statement praising Kotor’s “vibrant presence” and long-standing service to the state.

Hailing from the Okwagbe Waterside Community in Ughievwen Kingdom, Ughelli South, Mr. Kotor was celebrated for his ability to anchor high-level state events with charisma and precision. He is survived by his wife, children, and an extended family currently grappling with the shock of his sudden exit.

​Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
