The Anambra State Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt following a deadly cult-related attack on mourners during a burial ceremony in Ezi Village, Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area. The late Thursday night incident left four people dead and about 15 others injured after suspected cultists stormed the event on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately, causing terror among those gathered.
The attack occurred during burial rites for an 18-year-old boy, with witnesses reporting that the gunmen arrived suddenly, firing shots that sent mourners fleeing for their lives. Community sources suggest the attack was a revenge mission tied to rival cult clashes, as the deceased was believed to be a cultist and associates had gathered for the wake.
Police spokesperson DSP Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed in a statement that operatives swiftly responded to the distress call, restored calm, and evacuated the wounded for medical treatment. Sixteen used cartridges were recovered at the scene. Preliminary police investigations indicate the attack was connected to ongoing rivalry between cult groups.
Commissioner of Police CP Ikioye Orutugu condemned the attack as barbaric and reiterated the command’s determination to eradicate cult violence and restore security in the state. Authorities urged residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with law enforcement, and provide any information that may assist in apprehending the perpetrators.
