Oyo State Approves Over ₦113 Billion for Major Road Projects, Infrastructure, and Sports Hosting

The Oyo State Executive Council, under the leadership of Acting Governor Barr Abdulraheem Adebayo Lawal, convened earlier today to give the green light to a significant series of development projects across the state. These initiatives are aimed at transforming transportation infrastructure, boosting economic growth, and supporting sports development.

Among the headline projects approved is the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the Ojoo Interchange to Akinyele Interchange Road, extending 13.6 kilometers from Ojoo through IITA and Moniya Junction, including spurs leading to the New Oyo Expressway in Ibadan. This ambitious road upgrade will feature a dual carriageway with six lanes and is budgeted at over ₦63.6 billion, with an 18-month completion timeline.

The council also approved the rehabilitation of the 30 kilometer Okaka Junction–Otu–Igbojaye–KAP Film Village Road, which includes the construction of bridges spanning the Otu and Ofiki Rivers. This vital infrastructure project comes with a price tag exceeding ₦26 billion and is scheduled for completion within 18 months.

Further boosting connectivity is the dualisation of the 6.2 kilometer Ajia Junction (Ibadan-Ife Interchange) to Nigeria Air Force Base Road, set to cost over ₦17 billion and expected to be finalized within a year.

Other approved road works include the reconstruction of Isaba-Ogundoyin and Lanlate Garage Junction roads in Eruwa, totaling approximately 2.65 kilometers, with a budget of about ₦4.1 billion over 12 months. Additionally, the Apete-Awotan-Akufo Road (12 kilometers) reconstruction project will be completed, with the scope expanded to cover the Akufo Farm Settlement Road (2.2 kilometers), at a cost near ₦1.9 billion.

To ensure smoother commuting experiences within Ibadan metropolis, limited road patching, thermoplastic road markings, and kerb painting have been approved with funding just under ₦445 million.

In a significant move to promote sports, especially female football, the council sanctioned ₦110 million for the camping and hosting of Nigeria’s under-20 female national football team, the Falconets, who are preparing for their upcoming Women’s World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda in Ibadan.

Complementing the infrastructure development is an environmental initiative involving the planting of economic trees along both sides of the 32-kilometer stretch of the Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road (South East Wing) in Ibadan, funded at just over ₦108 million.

These projects form part of the state government’s continued drive to accelerate infrastructural development, enhance transportation networks, and support youth empowerment and sports excellence in Oyo State. The total worth of newly approved contracts exceeds ₦113 billion, financed through the state’s recently approved ₦300 billion loan facility.

The Acting Governor emphasized the administration’s commitment to timely delivery, economic empowerment, and sustainable urban development across all local government areas.
