In a significant move to modernize and safeguard a critical indigenous wealth-creation tradition, the Anambra State House of Assembly has officially passed the Igbo Apprenticeship Bill, popularly known as “Igba Boi,” into law. This pioneering legislation will come into effect on September 10, 2025.
The law formally recognizes and provides a legal framework for the traditional Igbo apprenticeship system—a centuries-old mentorship practice that has long driven entrepreneurship and economic development among the Igbo people. The bill sets a maximum apprenticeship duration of seven years and mandates that apprentices must have attained a basic level of education before enrollment.
Central to the legislation is the establishment of the Anambra State Igbo Apprenticeship Commission, a regulatory body tasked with registering apprentices, maintaining databases, issuing certificates of completion, and resolving disputes fairly within the apprenticeship relationship. The law aims to curb exploitation and ensure equitable treatment by requiring written agreements detailing the duties, duration, and terms of apprenticeship.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, lauded the collaborative efforts behind the bill, noting it as a blend of cultural preservation and modern governance. “We are taking what our forebears gave us and building a stronger, fairer system for generations to come,” he said.
The apprenticeship model has historically nurtured countless successful entrepreneurs, turning young aspirants into established business owners through comprehensive technical, managerial, and interpersonal training. This law now positions the age-old Igba Boi system within a formal legal structure, enhancing investor confidence and aligning it with global best practices to continue fostering economic inclusion and job creation in Anambra State.
This legislative milestone heralds a new chapter for the Igbo apprenticeship system, protecting its legacy while empowering future generations to sustain the remarkable entrepreneurial tradition that has defined the Igbo people for centuries.
