
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has extended hearty congratulations to the Bayelsa Queens for their outstanding performance at the ongoing WAFU Zone-B Women’s Champions League Qualifiers in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast. The Governor, speaking after a weekly prosperity walk at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, expressed confidence that the Queens are on track to become champions of the Zone and will confidently represent West Africa at the CAF women’s continental tournament.
The Bayelsa Queens have made a remarkable start to the competition, recording successive wins including a 3-0 victory over Togo’s ASKO, securing their place in the semi-finals of the tournament. Their impressive dominance continues to elevate hopes for a triumphant return to the CAF Women’s Champions League stage.
Governor Diri also applauded the men’s team, Bayelsa United, for commencing the Nigerian Professional Football League season on a high note with a hard-fought 1-0 away win against Shooting Stars of Ibadan. He described the win as a positive sign for the new season and called for sustained excellence both at home and on the road.
In a call to action for the men’s team, Governor Diri urged the immediate engagement of a technical adviser to ensure Bayelsa United’s competitive edge is sharpened for the season ahead. He expressed optimism that 2025 will be a pivotal year, with Bayelsa United aiming to lead the Nigerian Premier League and secure continental competition representation.
