By Sr. Kinse Annastasia

Religious Sisters are not mere ornaments in habits, nor are they possessions for priests to use at will. We are women called by God, consecrated to prayer, service, and the mission of the Church.
Yet behind stained glass and polished altars, we are too often seen as less. A priest once told me outright, “Sisters are meant to be priests’ wives.” He meant it seriously—and acted on it. This is not an isolated incident. Many Sisters have suffered the pain of being reduced to temptation rather than respected as collaborators in Christ’s vineyard. Some have endured manipulation cloaked as “spiritual direction” or felt pressured by benefactors expecting our dignity in exchange for support.
The abuse is not only external. Within congregations, some superiors misuse authority, silencing Sisters and leaving them vulnerable to predators. While a few wield power irresponsibly, many are crushed under obedience without justice. We see this and remain silent.
Equally painful is the betrayal from within—Sisters who abandon their vows for promiscuity to gain favor, material advantages, or pleasure undermine our prophetic witness and weaken our vocation’s dignity. This betrayal hands critics of the Church more reasons to scoff.
The scandal lies not only in sin but in the silence that protects it. A Church preaching purity while tolerating defilement mocks its own Gospel.
I write out of love for our Church, not hatred. Silence has never protected the innocent; it feeds the wolves.
Religious Sisters are not priests’ wives or bedmates. We are not bargaining chips for benefactors. We are women of God, and until the Church honors this truth, decay will continue within.
To priests, your vocation does not grant ownership over ours. To superiors, authority is not a license for cruelty. To Sisters, fidelity is essential—it is the soul of our consecration. To the Church I love, I say: do better, for God is watching.
Finally, I pledge to delete my personal Facebook account and wholeheartedly support any organization that provides a safe platform for reporting abuse without intimidation. We seek not scandal or validation, but truth, justice, and dignity in God’s house.
