Vigilantes Strip, Assault Female NYSC Member in Anambra — Authorities Condemn, Arrest Perpetrators

A disturbing incident in Oba community, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State has sparked outrage and calls for justice nationwide. Jennifer Edema Elohor, a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, was violently assaulted, stripped naked, and subjected to degrading treatment by operatives of the Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, on July 23, 2025. The vigilantes accused Jennifer and several of her NYSC colleagues of involvement in internet fraud, despite the victims promptly presenting their official NYSC identity cards and uniforms.

The assault, captured in a harrowing viral video, reveals the armed vigilantes beating Jennifer and destroying her clothes in a brutal act described by human rights groups as a gross violation of the victims’ dignity and rights. The victims endured severe beatings and humiliating sexual threats. The Haven360 Foundation has condemned the attack, demanding swift prosecution and reparations for the victims.

The Anambra State government, led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo, has strongly condemned the incident. Dr. Nonye Soludo, the First Lady, described the assault as ugly, humiliating, and unjustifiable. She emphasized that such actions tarnish Anambra’s reputation as a peaceful and hospitable state and called for justice and protection of human rights. She urged authorities to safeguard the dignity of NYSC members and preserve the state’s positive image.

Authorities have responded promptly by arresting and detaining the vigilantes involved. Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser to Governor Soludo on Community Security, stated that the Agunechemba operatives were pursuing suspected cultists who fled into the compound housing the corps members. While the security operation was legitimate, Emeakayi stressed that the excessive force used was unacceptable, and those responsible have been suspended pending final disciplinary or legal action.

The Anambra State Police Command condemned the assault as “very wrong” and criminal, affirming their commitment to justice. Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga acknowledged the delay in the investigation due to the victim’s temporary unavailability but assured the public that the command remains ready to enforce justice once Jennifer returns and cooperates fully. He also warned vigilante groups against brutality and abuse of authority, emphasizing the importance of professionalism.

This case highlights urgent concerns over the conduct of vigilante groups in the state and the need for robust oversight to protect vulnerable youths serving the nation. The NYSC Management has reiterated its commitment to the safety and welfare of all corps members, condemning the unprovoked assault.
