President Tinubu Embarks on Strategic Two-Nation Visit to Japan and Brazil

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departed Abuja on Thursday, August 14, 2025, for a significant two-nation trip to Japan and Brazil aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s economic and diplomatic ties. The President’s journey includes a scheduled stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, before proceeding to Japan.

In Japan, President Tinubu will participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) held in Yokohama from August 20 to 22. TICAD9, co-hosted by the Japanese government along with the United Nations, UNDP, African Union Commission, and the World Bank, focuses on Africa’s economic transformation under the theme “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa.” The conference aims to promote private investment, innovation, and the development of a resilient, sustainable African society centered on peace, stability, and human security.

President Tinubu will engage in plenary sessions aligned with the conference themes and hold bilateral meetings with global leaders. He is also set to meet with CEOs of Japanese companies that have either invested in or plan to invest in Nigeria, fostering stronger business relations.

Following the conclusion of TICAD9, President Tinubu will travel to Brasilia, Brazil, for a two-day state visit from August 24 to 25, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. This visit marks Tinubu’s third engagement in Brazil within nine months, highlighting the strategic importance of Nigeria’s relations with Latin America’s largest economy.

In Brazil, President Tinubu will conduct bilateral talks with President Lula da Silva and participate in a business forum alongside Brazilian investors. His delegation, which includes key ministers and senior officials, plans to explore opportunities for bilateral cooperation and economic partnerships. The visit is expected to culminate in the signing of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at boosting trade, investment, and technical collaboration between Nigeria and Brazil.

This carefully coordinated trip underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to diversifying Nigeria’s international partnerships and attracting foreign investment to drive national development.

The TICAD conference, established in 1993, is a triennial event alternating between Japan and African host countries, fostering policy dialogue and collaboration to support African development.
