Dr. Philip O. Ozuah, a distinguished alumnus of the University of Ibadan’s College of Medicine and current President and CEO of Montefiore Medicine in New York, recently reunited with his MBBS/BDS Class of 1985 for a memorable 40th reunion at the College of Medicine. The event included a keynote lecture titled “A Medical Journey,” delivered by Dr. Ozuah at the Paul Hendrickse Lecture Theatre within the University College Hospital premises.

A significant highlight of the occasion was the commissioning of the Philip O. Ozuah Block, the first of six planned student hostel blocks funded by Dr. Ozuah through the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association. This modern and fully equipped hostel building, named in his honor, symbolizes his strong commitment to advancing medical education in Nigeria by addressing the institution’s critical infrastructural needs.

Professor Temidayo Ogundiran, the Provost of the College of Medicine, praised Dr. Ozuah for his “resilience, excellence, and enduring legacy,” acknowledging the profound impact of his philanthropic contribution on the future of healthcare training in Nigeria. The week-long reunion, marked by reflections on legacy and leadership, also featured congratulatory messages that celebrated the class’s collective achievements over four decades.

Dr. Ozuah’s lecture recounted his journey that began at the University of Ibadan in 1979, where he completed his medical degree in 1985. He fondly remembered his youth service with the Nigerian Army and his pursuit of further studies abroad, starting with a master’s degree at the University of Southern California. He emphasized the value of giving back to his alma mater, describing his donation not as charity but as a responsibility to enrich the institution that shaped him.

The Philip O. Ozuah Block stands out with 88 two-bedroom units, four reading rooms, and accommodation for 176 students, setting a new standard for student welfare at the university. This development promises to alleviate long-standing challenges faced by medical students, including overcrowded hostels and difficulties with off-campus housing.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by prominent figures including the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Kayode O. Adebowale, who described Dr. Ozuah’s generosity as a reflection of deep commitment to medical education. Dignitaries such as the Deputy Governors of Oyo and Enugu States, Barrister Bayo Lawal and Barrister Ifeanyi Ossai, respectively, as well as representatives from national education and health ministries, lauded the initiative and called for more alumni participation in university development.

The project not only symbolizes the spirit of alumni stewardship but also inspires current students, who see Dr. Ozuah’s engagement as a powerful reminder that success can and should be tied to giving back. With five more hostel blocks planned, this initiative is poised to transform the living and learning environment of medical students at Nigeria’s premier university.

Dr. Philip O. Ozuah’s story and contribution eloquently bridge his global medical leadership with his dedication to fostering the next generation of Nigerian medical professionals, ensuring his legacy endures through bricks, spirit, and purpose.
