Akin Olowokere, the newly appointed assistant coach of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) in Ibadan, Oyo State, tragically passed away on Monday morning, August 11, 2025. Eyewitnesses reported that Olowokere suddenly slumped on the pitch during the team’s morning training session and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
Olowokere was a respected figure in Nigerian football, known for his calm and soft-spoken demeanor. Before joining Shooting Stars as assistant coach, he was a former player for Sunshine Stars of Akure and had later transitioned into coaching. He most recently served as an assistant coach under Edith Agoye at Sunshine Stars before being unveiled as part of the new coaching team for the Oluyole Warriors following the club’s parting with its previous technical crew led by Gbenga Ogunbote.
His sudden demise has shocked and saddened the Nigerian football community, which has continued to pour in tributes for the late tactician. Olowokere had just signed a contract with Shooting Stars that was expected to run until 2027, marking a promising new chapter in his coaching career.
The club and fans mourn the loss of a dedicated coach whose career spanned from being a player to a mentor and leader in Nigerian domestic football. Further details about the cause of death and funeral arrangements are awaited.
Akin Olowokere’s death is a significant loss to Shooting Stars SC—a club with a rich history and tradition in Nigerian football—and to the wider football fraternity across the country. His contributions to the game, particularly in the southwest Nigerian football circles, will be fondly remembered.
