A Professor of Computer Science and Cybersecurity at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Professor (Mrs.) Saidat Adebukola Onashoga FNCS has declared her candidacy for the presidency of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), the umbrella body and the premier body of all Computing and Information Technology (IT) professionals, interest groups, and stakeholders in Nigeria.

She is bringing to the table a compelling blend of leadership experience, academic excellence, and visionary thinking.

ValidViewNetwork reports that she is not only a respected scholar in data mining, computer security, and privacy-preserving algorithms, but also a proven institution-builder who has delivered impactful initiatives such as the Computer Brains Club, the Yele Okeremi Young IT Brains Competition, and the NCS Anthem during her tenure as the Chairperson of the Ogun State Chapter of the reputable association. Her recent success in coordinating ConNovate 2025, a hybrid international conference of IT professionals underscores her capacity for delivering results at scale.

Prof. Onashoga’s vision is to sustain and promote the values of professionalism, inclusiveness, innovation, and accountability while positioning NCS as a globally competitive professional body. Her Strategic Action Plan is rooted in both the Society’s heritage and global best practices.

Sharing her views recently, Prof Onashoga asserted that under her leadership, NCS would launch a flagship annual lecture series bringing global and local thought leaders together to discuss frontier issues in technology, governance, and innovation. She intends to strengthen state chapters, creating vibrant communities for women in computing, youth innovators, and public sector technologists, thereby fostering mentorship, inclusiveness, and representation.

Recognizing the critical link between research and economic growth, she confirmed that she is poised to champion the establishment of an NCS peer-reviewed journal and conference proceedings, encouraging applied research in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and data analytics with direct policy and industry relevance.

Her plan also includes adopting a robust Code of Ethics to embed principles of fairness, responsibility, and public good into professional conduct. She envisions a fully operational NCS Digital Learning Platform, offering certified online courses and webinars tailored to Nigeria’s evolving technology ecosystem.

She further emphasised her determination to initiate strategic partnerships with government agencies, private sector leaders, and international development organisations to drive public–private collaboration, funding, and ICT-for-development projects.

Prof. Onashoga is also committed to making youth innovation a national priority, organizing annual hackathons, tech festivals, and creative coding challenges to identify, mentor, and support Nigeria’s next generation of digital entrepreneurs. Each of these initiatives, she asserts, will not only strengthen the Society but also help drive Nigeria’s digital economy, ensuring NCS becomes both locally impactful and globally relevant.

Her readiness for the assignment is underscored by a career of results-driven leadership, strategic thinking, and dedication to professional excellence. She is poised to take the Nigeria Computer Society to enviable heights, embedding global best practices while preserving the Society’s unique identity and relevance so that it can stand shoulder to shoulder with leading computing societies across the world, ValidViewNetwork reports.

ValidViewNetwork reports that with Prof. Onashoga at the helm, the NCS would be positioned as a benchmark of excellence, innovation, and economic relevance in Africa’s digital transformation story.

Founded in 1978 as the Computer Association of Nigeria (COAN), which later transformed into NCS in 2002 as a result of harmonisation with other stakeholders and interest groups, the Nigeria Computer Society has a long and illustrious history of promoting Computing and Information Technology in Nigeria.

Over the years, NCS has grown significantly in membership and influence, making substantial contributions to the IT landscape in Nigeria and playing a crucial role in the development of the IT sector in Nigeria. By fostering a community of professionals, advocating for progressive policies, and promoting knowledge sharing and professional development, NCS continues to drive the advancement of information technology in the country.
