A 33-year-old Colorado woman, Brianna Lafferty, has captivated the world with her extraordinary account after being pronounced clinically dead for eight minutes due to complications from myoclonus dystonia, a rare and severe neurological disorder.
Lafferty, who had long battled her life-limiting illness, recounted the moment her body “gave up.” During the medical emergency, she describes an out-of-body experience where her soul seemed to float above her physical form before transitioning into what she calls a timeless realm. “I felt a complete detachment from my human self. There was no pain, just a deep sense of peace and clarity. It was as if everything happened all at once, and time did not exist,” she said.
She recalled hearing a gentle voice ask if she was ready to move on. Upon consenting, she felt enveloped by darkness, yet never alone—revealing a presence she describes as a higher intelligence that radiated unconditional love. Lafferty became convinced in that space that “death is an illusion,” stating, “Our consciousness remains alive; our being only transforms. I realised our thoughts shape reality in that place, and what I used to fear lost all power over me.”
Her story includes visions of mysterious, familiar beings and a realization that life’s challenges have meaning. “Looking back, I see why I suffered. There’s clarity as to the reasons for all my difficulties,” she explained. Upon returning to her body—a process she said felt like it lasted months—she spent four days in hospital adjusting to the aftermath, both physically and spiritually.
Her near-death encounter left lasting effects, including damage to her pituitary gland which required experimental brain surgery. While she remains somewhat wary of enduring such a harrowing experience again due to the difficulty of recovery, Lafferty now claims to live with deep gratitude. “I’ve learned not to fear death. I believe I survived for a purpose,” she affirmed, adding that her experience now allows her to help others facing chronic illness, mortality, or spiritual crises.
“Every hardship is an opportunity for growth,” she says. “We choose to learn through pain and challenge—the soul’s journey goes beyond what’s available in the spiritual realm. Life on earth may be temporary, but consciousness, I believe, endures.”
