A fire outbreak on Thursday afternoon devastated the Ile-Ewe area near Sawmill, Ogbomoso, Oyo State, razing six out of ten locked-up shops and destroying properties worth millions of Naira. The incident, which occurred around 2:08 PM, sent shockwaves through the commercial community as shop owners and residents watched helplessly.
According to Hon. Maroof Akinwande, Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, firefighters led by Chief Fire Superintendent Dairo responded swiftly after an emergency call from a resident, Mr. David Ajagbe. The team arrived within minutes and battled the blaze, successfully preventing the fire from spreading to neighbouring shops and properties. “Upon arrival, we found six out of ten locked-up shops fully engulfed in flames. Our team immediately deployed firefighting equipment and successfully contained the fire,” Akinwande told reporters.
While the financial impact is significant—with millions of Naira lost in goods and infrastructure—the fire service also confirmed that their prompt intervention saved other shops, sparing additional losses. Importantly, no casualties were reported. An official investigation is in progress to determine the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined as at press time.
