Olumo Rock Reopens After Major Renovation, Ogun Declares Free Entry Till September

The iconic Olumo Rock Tourist Complex in Abeokuta has officially reopened to the public following a comprehensive renovation, with Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun declaring free entry for all visitors until the end of September 2025. The move is aimed at promoting tourism and revitalizing cultural heritage in the state.

During the commissioning ceremony on Thursday, Governor Abiodun emphasized the significance of Olumo Rock as more than just a geological formation, but as a “sanctuary of strength, a symbol of refuge, and a beacon of identity for the Egba people.” He underscored that the renovation is not merely infrastructural but a revival of memory and pride, reaffirming Ogun’s cultural roots.

The upgraded tourist complex now features:

• A modern galleria displaying artworks and portraits of eminent Nigerians.
• A scenic gazebo for leisure and gathering.
• A new restaurant serving both local and continental cuisines.
• Shops selling the renowned adire fabrics.
• A standby generator to ensure uninterrupted power to the newly installed elevators and facilities.
• Entrepreneur zones to support artisans and vendors.

Governor Abiodun noted that tourism is a core part of the state’s ISEYA development agenda, with the potential to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and foster community development. He invited tourists from around the world to discover Ogun’s renewed cultural landmarks, asserting that Olumo Rock has been transformed from a historical relic into a “modern heritage destination”.

The governor added that efforts are underway to concession the site to a reputable organization for ongoing management and upkeep, and reaffirmed plans to develop more tourism sites across the state.

Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbayi, praised the revamp, predicting an uptick in visitor numbers. The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, highlighted the Rock’s historic and spiritual roles as a place of sanctuary and prayer for the Egba people.

Chief (Mrs) Nike Okundaye, CEO of Nike Arts Gallery, expressed optimism that the renovated complex and its new gallery will attract art lovers and global tourists, foster cultural exchanges, and create jobs, projecting that Olumo Rock will become Nigeria’s top tourist site within two years.

With the doors now open and free access in effect through September, Ogun State positions itself as a prime cultural and tourism hub in Nigeria, inviting everyone to experience the renewed legacy and hospitality at Olumo Rock.
