US Targets Brazilian Judge With Sanctions, Warns Nigerian Judiciary Over Human Rights Abuses

The United States government, under President Donald Trump, has imposed sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes over allegations of serious human rights abuses, and issued a stern warning to judicial officials in Nigeria and beyond, vowing a global crackdown on corruption and judicial misconduct using the Global Magnitsky Act.

The sanctions, announced Wednesday by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, were imposed after de Moraes was accused of arbitrary detentions, denying fair trials, and ordering social media platforms, including U.S. companies, to silence political critics. The U.S. Treasury confirmed that de Moraes’s assets in the United States will be frozen, and he is banned from entering the country.

Secretary Rubio warned judicial officials worldwide, singling out Nigeria, that the United States will not hesitate to use the Global Magnitsky sanctions program to hold to account those who trample the fundamental rights of their citizens. “Let this be a warning to those who would trample on the fundamental rights of their countrymen—judicial robes cannot protect you,” he declared.

The Global Magnitsky Act allows the U.S. to impose financial penalties and travel bans against foreign officials implicated in egregious human rights violations or significant corruption, with similar mechanisms now adopted in the UK, EU, and Canada. These sanctions follow growing criticism of de Moraes from both former president Trump and like-minded commentators, who accused the Brazilian justice of leading a politically motivated “witch hunt” against allies such as former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Announcing the sanctions, the U.S. Department of State asserted that de Moraes “abused his authority by engaging in a targeted and politically motivated effort designed to silence political critics through the issuance of secret orders compelling online platforms, including U.S. social media companies, to ban the accounts of individuals for posting protected speech”.

Brazil’s government swiftly condemned the move, calling it an “unacceptable” interference in the country’s judiciary and reaffirming support for de Moraes. The escalation comes amidst heightened US-Brazil tensions, including newly announced 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports, measures President Trump has linked to what he calls attacks on fair legal process affecting his allies.

As the U.S. signals a willingness to expand such sanctions, judicial officials in Nigeria and other nations have been put on notice that abuses of power and infringements on human rights will face robust international consequences under American law.
