The Anambra business community and wider public have been thrown into mourning and outrage following the brutal abduction and murder of Ifesinachi Onyekere, widely known as the owner of Fish Magnet, a thriving fish business in the state.
On the night of Saturday, July 27, 2025, armed assailants invaded Ifesinachi’s residence in Ezinifite, Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area. Eyewitness accounts and official police statements confirm that the attackers arrived in an SUV, shot the young entrepreneur in the leg, and whisked him away in his own navy blue Toyota Corolla. Family sources revealed that shortly after the abduction, the kidnappers demanded ransom, a demand which was reportedly met. Despite this, Ifesinachi was not released. His lifeless body was later discovered dumped by the roadside on the morning of Wednesday, July 30, sparking anger and despair across Anambra and beyond.
Ifesinachi, fondly called “Fish Magnet,” was celebrated as a rising star among young entrepreneurs. He had leveraged social media, particularly TikTok, to build his business and popularize affordable fish sales, reportedly making him a target of resentment within the industry. There are growing concerns that professional jealousy may have played a role in his tragic fate.

The police, led by Commissioner Ikioye Orutugu, have assured the public that all tactical and intelligence units are now on a manhunt for the kidnappers and murderers. According to Police Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the initial investigation suggests the act was a targeted attack: the perpetrators trailed their victim before launching the assault, and later abandoned his vehicle along Ukwulu/Igbariam road in what appears to be a planned escape route. “We owe it to the family, the people of Anambra, and the memory of the deceased to ensure the culprits face the full weight of the law,” the police stated, while promising further updates as the investigation progresses.
Public figures and activists have joined the call for justice, highlighting the increasingly precarious security situation in Anambra. Social commentators, including popular online activist VeryDarkMan, mourned the loss and called for a greater commitment to the safety of the state’s entrepreneurs.
