Olubadan Olakulehin’s State Burial Set for August 8

The burial programme for the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba (Dr.) Frederick Akinloye Iyanda Owolabi Olakulehin, has been officially released. Oba Olakulehin, who passed away on July 7, 2025, at the age of 90, will receive a state burial approved by the Oyo State Governor on Friday, August 8. The funeral service and interment will take place at the Cathedral of Saint Peters, Aremo, Ibadan, starting at 10:00 a.m.

A series of commemorative events will lead up to the burial, celebrating the monarch’s commitment to unity, youth development, and service to Ibadan and Oyo State. The week-long activities begin on Sunday, August 3, with the semi-final matches of the Olubadan Olakulehin Football Cup at Bishop Phillips Academy Stadium, Ibadan, at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. On Monday, August 4, the Table Tennis Tournament preliminaries will hold at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, at 10:00 a.m.

Tuesday, August 5, will feature the football tournament’s third-place match at Olubadan Stadium, Ibadan, at 2:00 p.m., with the final following at 4:00 p.m. The Table Tennis Tournament finals will be held on Wednesday, August 6, at 10:00 a.m.

Obsequies continue on Thursday, August 7, with an interfaith lying-in-state service at Mapo Hall at 10:00 a.m., followed by a Christian wake at Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, at 3:00 p.m. On Friday, August 8, the burial and funeral service will take place at the Cathedral of Saint Peters, Aremo.

The programme concludes with a family thanksgiving at the same cathedral on Sunday, August 10, at 10:00 a.m.

Oba Olakulehin is survived by children, grandchildren, siblings, and many who will honour his impactful legacy throughout the week’s events. The Olakulehin family, while expressing gratitude for outpourings of support from government and the community, has invited members of the public to honour the late monarch.
