IBADAN, OYO STATE – Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on Tuesday visited the family of the late Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, Ige Olakulehin I, to offer his condolences. During his visit, the Governor reiterated his commitment to maintaining the “solid” foundation of the Ibadan traditional institution, a system he asserts was significantly strengthened under his administration.
Oba Olakulehin, who passed away on July 7, 2025, just two days after his 90th birthday and less than a year after his coronation on July 12, 2024, was the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadan.
Governor Makinde emphasized that the challenges faced by the institution when he assumed office in 2019 provided an opportunity to unify and fortify the traditional system. “I am glad that not only did I return the crown to Baba, he got to the level of becoming Olubadan before he joined his ancestors,” the Governor stated, recalling a past conversation with the late monarch about restoring crowns.
He expressed his satisfaction that the crisis was utilized to bring unity back to the institution, asserting that “today, there is no question about the unity and strength of that institution.” Makinde further declared with confidence, “for the next 50 years, the Ibadan traditional institution will remain solid, because we are now united.”
The Governor also assured the family of his full involvement in Oba Olakulehin’s burial, highlighting his personal connection as a son of Aremo.
In their responses, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola, the Balogun of Ibadanland, speaking on behalf of the Olubadan-in-Council, and Prince Sumbo Owolabi, the eldest son, conveyed their appreciation for Governor Makinde’s unwavering support, both during the late monarch’s lifetime and after his passing. Oba Ajibola particularly commended Makinde’s handling of traditional institution matters, describing his tenure as “renowned for good things.”
Prince Owolabi similarly thanked the Governor for his continuous support.
Among the Governor’s entourage were former Deputy Governor Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi, Senior Executive Assistant on General Duties Chief Bayo Lawal, Representative Abass Adigun Agboworin, commissioners, members of the House of Assembly, and chairmen of local governments in Ibadanland.
