The Itabo community in Ibarapa North, Oyo State, has marked a new chapter in its history as Prince Alabi Jamiu Adedotun emerged as the Onitabo-elect, concluding a 13-year-long leadership vacuum that gripped the ancient town.
Historic Selection Ends Succession Crisis
The decisive selection took place on Friday, July 18, 2025, at the Ibarapa North East LCDA secretariat, following years of disputes and legal wrangling that had left the Onitabo stool vacant since the passing of the last monarch. Five candidates from the Agan ruling family vied for the throne, with Prince Alabi Jamiu Adedotun securing three out of four kingmakers’ votes to clinch victory. Prince Kehinde Isiaka Bayonle claimed the remaining single vote, while three other contenders—Olagoke Stephen Oláníyì, Moteleola Taiwo, and Odewole Segun—received no support from the kingmakers.
Overseen by Kingmakers, Authorities and Security Operatives
The crucial election was conducted by four traditional kingmakers: Adeleke Ogundeji (Elemo), Okelola Olawale (Ojumo), Olaniyi Olagbeso (Asalu), and Afolabi Gbolamu (Oota, Warrant Chief). Distinguished observers included the LCDA Chairman, Hon. Olalowo; the Head of Local Administration, Mr. S.I. Olagoke; and the Director of Administration and General Services.
Proactive security measures were ensured by a joint team from the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Police Force, Operation Burst, and Amotekun Corps in order to prevent unrest amid heightened expectations in the community.

Community Calls for Swift Government Approval
The 13-year contest over the ascension saw several claims to the throne challenged—some candidates faced opposition due to questions over their legitimacy or backgrounds. With the impasse now resolved, the kingmakers have issued an urgent appeal to the Oyo State Government and the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Local Government Affairs to expedite formal approval, echoing the community’s desire to end the long period without a monarch.
Local residents stressed that further delays in installing their new king would be intolerable, emphasizing the hunger for stability and leadership following over a decade in limbo.
Significance for the Itabo Community
Prince Jamiu Alabi’s emergence breaks a cycle of disputes and inaugurates a new era for one of Ibarapa’s ancient thrones. His selection is widely viewed as a turning point, promising renewed unity and hope for the people of Itabo.
“This marks a significant milestone for Itabo, which has endured more than a decade without a king amid uncertainty and division. The entire community now looks forward to a prompt installation and a future of peace and progress,” a local stakeholder shared.
