Dr. Olawale Sulaiman, a renowned neurosurgeon based in Louisiana, has made a remarkable decision to forgo a quarter of his salary to provide lifesaving medical care in Nigeria. Driven by the urgent health needs in his homeland, Dr. Sulaiman spends 7 to 12 days each month treating underprivileged communities and addressing severe neurological conditions that otherwise go untreated.
Through the RNZ Foundation—which he co-founded with his wife, Patricia, in 2019—Dr. Sulaiman has already performed over 500 free brain and spinal surgeries for Nigerians unable to afford complex procedures. His efforts focus on life-altering conditions such as spinal injuries and brain tumors, breathing hope into communities with limited access to specialized healthcare.
Beyond the operating room, Dr. Sulaiman’s reach extends even wider. He has delivered preventive healthcare services to over 5,000 individuals, emphasizing early intervention to reduce the burden of neurological disease. Determined to promote sustainable change, he trains Nigerian doctors in advanced, minimally invasive surgical techniques and is overseeing the creation of four neuroscience centers nationwide.
Dr. Sulaiman’s humanitarian work is supported by Louisiana’s Ochsner Health System, where he serves as chairman of the neurosurgery department. Born in Lagos and having overcome a challenging upbringing, he earned his medical degree in Bulgaria, eventually rising to prominence as a global advocate for accessible healthcare. His journey and selfless commitment set a powerful example of how compassion and personal sacrifice can help bridge deep healthcare disparities, reshaping lives and communities both at home and abroad.
