LONDON, England – David Kaff, the beloved British musician and actor known for his iconic portrayal of keyboardist Viv Savage in the 1984 cult classic mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, has passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 79. His death was announced on Monday, July 14, 2025.

The news was shared by his bandmates from Mutual of Alameda’s Wild Kingdom, who posted a poignant message on Facebook: “Our brother David Kaffinetti passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday. We are devastated by this event. David always had a kind word and a quick wit that would slay you where you stand. Then he’d make you smile doing it! RIP dear brother.”

Born David Kaffinetti on April 17, 1946, in Folkestone, England, Kaff’s musical journey began as a founding member of the progressive rock band Rare Bird. The group achieved international success with their 1969 hit “Sympathy,” which charted in the UK, Italy, and France, selling over a million copies globally. He also contributed his keyboard talents as a session musician for legendary Chuck Berry on The London Chuck Berry Sessions in 1972.

However, it was his comedic turn as the perpetually laid-back Viv Savage in Rob Reiner’s directorial debut that cemented his place in pop culture history. Despite a smaller role compared to the main trio, Kaff’s memorable lines, particularly his life philosophy – “Have a good time… all the time” – resonated with audiences and became a fan favorite. Other notable lines included his quip about playing Nigel’s bassline in “Big Bottom” because “I have two hands,” and marveling at the “magic” of video games.

After the film’s release, Kaff continued to perform with Spinal Tap for a period, including a memorable appearance on Saturday Night Live in 1984. He remained an active part of the music scene, performing with various acts including Model Citizenz and his last known band, Mutual of Alameda’s Wild Kingdom.
