Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State – The recent passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of the Ijebu Kingdom, has resonated deeply across Nigeria, particularly within the Diya family and the Odogbolu Local Government. Tributes pour in for a monarch celebrated not only for his six-decade reign but for his unwavering courage and commitment to justice, even in the face of grave political peril.

In a poignant statement, Hon. (Dr.) Tunde Diya, Executive Chairman of Odogbolu Local Government and son of the late General Oladipo Diya, shared a personal testament to the Awujale’s extraordinary character. Dr. Diya recounted the tumultuous period of his father, General Oladipo Diya’s, persecution during one of Nigeria’s darkest political chapters in the late 1990s. General Diya, who served as Chief of General Staff and was implicated in an alleged coup plot against the then-military head of state, General Sani Abacha, faced a death sentence that was later commuted.
During this challenging time, when many shied away, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona stood firm, lending his powerful royal voice not for personal gain but for the sake of justice and truth. “You gave comfort in a time of betrayal, light in an hour of national gloom, and protection when danger circled close,” Dr. Diya stated, emphasizing the Awujale’s steadfast support. This unwavering stance, he noted, served as a powerful reminder that the Ijebu people do not abandon their own.
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, and reigned until July 13, 2025, was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving monarchs, widely recognized for his uncompromising leadership and his significant contributions to the progress and unity of Ijebuland and Nigeria. His principled stand during national crises earned him immense respect and an enduring legacy, recently cemented by the conferment of the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON).

For the Diya family, the Awujale’s courage was instrumental in their restoration and the preservation of their dignity. As Dr. Tunde Diya now serves as Chairman of Odogbolu Local Government, he carries forward not just his father’s name but also the profound legacy of a king who exemplified nobility through righteousness and loyalty.
“Kabiyesi, you were more than a monarch; you were a moral compass in a time of turbulence,” Dr. Diya articulated. “You were a shield when the winds howled and a pillar when the roof shook.”

The Diya family, and indeed the people of Odogbolu Local Government, mourn the departure of a revered royal father whose spirit, though still, leaves an indelible mark on their destiny. His legacy, like the shade of a fallen Iroko tree, is set to cover generations.
Rest well, Kabiyesi. Your steadfastness for us inspires us to rise in your honour.

Executive Chairman, Odogbolu Local Government, Ogun State.
