A respected scientist and mother, Dr. Fortune Gomo, was killed in a shocking knife attack on South Road, Dundee, on Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred around 4:25 p.m. as Dr. Gomo, 39, walked with her 10-year-old daughter. Emergency services responded swiftly, but despite their efforts, Dr. Gomo was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dr. Gomo, originally from Zimbabwe, had recently completed her PhD in Geography and Environmental Science at the University of Dundee and was working as a senior resource planner for Scottish Water. She was widely regarded as an exceptional scientist and a valued member of the local and academic communities.
Police Scotland confirmed that a 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He is expected to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court today. Authorities have assured the public that there is no wider risk, and the investigation is ongoing. Detective Superintendent Peter Sharp, leading the inquiry, expressed condolences to Dr. Gomo’s family and emphasized that specialist officers are supporting them during this difficult time.
The tragedy has sparked widespread grief and outrage, particularly among Dundee’s African community, with calls for justice and greater attention to public safety. Floral tributes and messages of support have been left at the scene, and collections are underway to support Dr. Gomo’s family.

Police have appealed for any witnesses or individuals with information to come forward by contacting Police Scotland or Crimestoppers.
