Southeast Political Shake-Up: APGA Eyes Governors Mbah,Otti Amid Defection Speculations

Abuja, Nigeria – The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has announced its intention to woo Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State into its fold, a move that could significantly alter the political landscape of the Southeast ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to a statement issued by APGA’s National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ejimofor Opara, following the party’s 16th National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Abuja, arrangements are underway for the high-profile defections. The NWC has mandated Chief Uche Nwegbo, the Deputy National Chairman (South), to lead a delegation for formal engagements with both governors.

This initiative, driven by a motion from the Party’s Vice Chairman for the Southeast, Rev. Augustine Ehiemere, is aimed at consolidating APGA’s influence in the region and strengthening its position as a national political force. Opara emphasized that the current political climate necessitates strategic realignment among progressive leaders.

“APGA, renowned for its pro-people policies and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the poor and vulnerable, sees this development as a pivotal step toward expanding its base and amplifying its developmental agenda,” Opara stated. He added that the potential defection of Governors Otti (Labour Party) and Mbah (Peoples Democratic Party), who command significant political capital, would herald a new era of unity and serve as a counterweight to the dominance of the two major national parties, reinforcing APGA’s role as the political home of Ndigbo.

The NWC’s decision, Opara noted, underscores APGA’s resolve to build a stronger, more inclusive platform for progressive governance in Nigeria, aiming to “leave no one behind.”

While APGA expresses its readiness to welcome the governors, it is important to note that both Governor Alex Otti and Governor Peter Mbah have previously denied rumors of their intent to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) earlier this year. Governor Otti, currently of the Labour Party, had stated in April that any decision to leave his current party would be formally communicated.

Governor Mbah, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, similarly dismissed claims of a move to the APC in July.
Should these defections materialize, they would represent the most significant political shift in the Southeast since the 2023 general elections, potentially signaling a broader realignment as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
