Gunmen Attack Ex-Sports Minister Sango’s Home, Kill One, Injure Three

In a brazen midnight assault, gunmen stormed the Dalwal village residence of former Minister of Sports, Chief Damishi Sango, killing a female relative and injuring three others, including his police escort.

• The attack occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, 2025, with assailants reportedly beginning their rampage in the community around 11:00 p.m. before targeting Sango’s home at about 1:00 a.m.
• Eyewitnesses said the attackers fired sporadically upon arrival, resulting in the fatal shooting of a female family member. Three others, among them Inspector Walba Go Tom of the Special Protection Unit Base 4, Makurdi, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment at Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos.
• The attackers also made away with the police officer’s service rifle during the incident.

Chief Sango, who was present during the attack, escaped unharmed. The Plateau State Police Command has launched an investigation and intensified patrols in the area.

Community leaders and local officials have condemned the attack, calling for urgent action to address the persistent insecurity in Riyom Local Government Area and across Plateau State. Residents expressed concern over the increasing frequency of violent attacks in the region, urging security agencies to step up efforts to protect lives and property.
