
Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has announced plans to preserve and digitise the extensive library of the late Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo, the state’s second elected governor, transforming it into a major tourist attraction. The declaration was made on Wednesday during an executive session and lying-in-state held in honour of the revered statesman at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.
Governor Makinde described Dr. Olunloyo’s library as a “treasure trove of knowledge” capable of addressing many of Nigeria’s current challenges. He emphasized that preserving the library would immortalise the late governor’s legacy and serve as a resource for future generations.
In addition to the library project, the governor revealed that the Omololu Olunloyo Leisure Park, located in the Alakia-Airport area of Ibadan and named after the late governor in 2023, is ready for commissioning. The state government had also previously named the 3-kilometre Airport Road after Dr. Olunloyo.
Makinde praised the late governor as one of his trusted advisers, often consulting him on state matters. He highlighted the administration’s commitment to tourism development and expressed hope that the library would become a key cultural and educational site for visitors to Oyo State.
Deputy Governor Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal described Dr. Olunloyo as a “towering intellectual” with an unwavering dedication to public service, whose legacy will continue to inspire.
Speaking on behalf of the Olunloyo family, Mrs. Oluyemi Olunloyo-Buckner lauded her father’s exceptional political acumen and his profound contributions to Oyo State’s development.
The event also featured tributes from prominent figures including Justice Iyabo Yerima, Chief Judge of Oyo State, and Dr. Taiwo Lasisi, Acting Rector of The Polytechnic Ibadan, all celebrating Dr. Olunloyo’s brilliance and service.
Notable attendees included Chief (Mrs) Mutiat Ladoja, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, Barr. Hazeem Gbolarumi, Chief Mrs. Onikepo Akande, CON, and other dignitaries.
