Ibadan,Oyo State — The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin, has called on masquerades and their followers to refrain from oppressing or intimidating residents during the 2025 Egungun Festival, which commenced today, Monday, June 23.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Solomon Ayoade, the traditional ruler emphasized the importance of peaceful celebrations that respect the rights of all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations. He warned that any acts of violence or intimidation would not be tolerated and would attract serious sanctions.
The Olubadan urged all stakeholders—including traditional title holders, worshipers, law enforcement agencies, and the people of Ibadanland—to collaborate in ensuring the festival’s success. He highlighted the festival’s role in promoting Ibadan’s rich cultural heritage, fostering religious harmony, and contributing to the economic development of Ibadan and Yorubaland.
“Let this year’s Egungun Festival be peaceful, entertaining, and attractive, enhancing the preservation of our cultural legacy and boosting economic activities,” Oba Olakulehin stated.
The annual Egungun Festival is a significant cultural event in Ibadan, celebrating ancestral spirits through vibrant masquerade displays. This year’s festival is expected to draw large crowds, with heightened security measures in place to maintain order.
